This recent piece at The Viper Pit Tattoo & Piercing Studio in Irlam, Manchester was created using the client’s great gran’s actual handwriting, turning something incredibly personal into a tattoo she can carry with her forever.
The words:
“See you in the stars”
were incorporated into a delicate fine-line floral design by Chris, with flowers, leaves and subtle stars flowing naturally along the forearm.
Handwriting Tattoos in Manchester
Handwriting tattoos are becoming a popular way of creating a genuinely unique memorial tattoo.
Rather than using a computer font, we can work from photographs of original handwriting found on things such as birthday cards, letters, notes, recipes or old documents.
The aim is to preserve the little characteristics that make somebody’s handwriting recognisable — including the shape of individual letters and the natural flow of their writing.
For this tattoo, keeping her great gran’s handwriting authentic was the most important part of the design.
Creating a Personal Memorial Tattoo
A memorial tattoo doesn’t have to be a portrait or include somebody’s name and dates.
Sometimes a few handwritten words can hold just as much meaning.
For this piece, Chris surrounded the original handwriting with fine-line flowers, botanical details and small stars. The design follows the shape of the client’s forearm, creating a larger tattoo without taking attention away from the handwritten message.
The finished tattoo is delicate, personal and completely unique to her.
A little piece of her great gran, carried with her always.
Can You Tattoo Handwriting From an Old Card or Letter?
In many cases, yes.
If you have handwriting from somebody important to you, take a clear photograph or scan of it and send it over to us.
Even if the words you want aren’t all together, it may be possible to carefully work with individual letters or sections of handwriting to create the final tattoo while retaining as much of the original character as possible.
We’ll always look at the reference first and discuss what will translate well into a tattoo.
