Getting your baby’s ears pierced is a big little milestone, and understandably, most parents have plenty of questions before booking.
Who will be doing the piercing? Will the earrings be even? Is a needle better than a gun? What jewellery is used? How do you look after them afterwards? And, probably the biggest question of all — will my baby be okay?
At The Viper Pit Tattoo & Piercing Studio in Irlam, Manchester, baby and children’s ear piercing is one of the services we specialise in.
We offer professional needle-only baby ear piercing from 4 months old, carried out in a licensed studio by experienced piercers. Every baby’s ears are digitally measured before piercing to help ensure accurate, balanced placement, and every baby also receives their own ear-piercing certificate to take home as a keepsake.
We want parents to know exactly what to expect, so here’s everything you need to know before booking.
What Age Can Babies Have Their Ears Pierced?
At The Viper Pit, we offer baby ear piercing from 4 months old.
Every family is different, and deciding when to have your baby’s ears pierced is completely your choice.
Our job is simply to make sure that when you decide the time is right, the piercing is carried out professionally, hygienically and with proper attention given to placement, jewellery and aftercare.
If you’re unsure whether your baby is ready, you’re always welcome to contact us before booking.
Needle-Only Baby Ear Piercing
One of the most important things parents should check when choosing somewhere for baby ear piercing is how the piercing will actually be performed.
At The Viper Pit, we do not use piercing guns.
Our baby ear piercings are carried out using sterile, single-use professional piercing needles.
A professional piercing needle is specifically designed for piercing and creates a clean opening for the jewellery.
Traditional piercing guns work differently, using force to push jewellery through the ear.
We’re a professional piercing studio, so we believe in using professional piercing techniques.
If you’re comparing places for your baby’s first earrings, don’t be afraid to ask:
“Do you use a needle or a gun?”
It’s worth knowing before you book.
Digitally Measured for Accurate Placement
One of the biggest concerns parents have is making sure their baby’s earrings are positioned as evenly as possible.
At The Viper Pit, we don’t simply mark the ears by eye.
Every baby’s ears are carefully digitally measured using precision digital calipers before the piercing takes place.
These measurements help us achieve accurate, balanced placement and give us another level of precision when deciding where each piercing should sit.
We also take your baby’s individual ear shape and anatomy into account.
No two ears are perfectly identical, so good placement isn’t simply about putting two dots at exactly the same measurement. We combine the digital measurements with our professional judgement to make sure the finished placement looks as even and balanced as possible.
The positions are marked and checked before we pierce.
It’s an extra step, but when you’re trusting somebody with your baby’s first ear piercings, we believe careful measurement matters.

What Happens During a Baby Ear Piercing Appointment?
We want the experience to be as calm and straightforward as possible for both baby and parent.
When you arrive, we’ll talk you through what is going to happen and prepare everything needed for the piercing.
Your baby’s ears are assessed, digitally measured and carefully marked.
The placement is checked before anything is pierced.
Once everything is ready, the piercings are carried out using sterile single-use needles and the starter jewellery is fitted.
Obviously, babies haven’t read our appointment book and occasionally have their own opinions about proceedings!
Crying or wriggling is completely normal.
We keep the actual piercing process efficient, calm and professional so you can comfort your baby afterwards.
Will My Baby Cry?
They might — and we’d rather be realistic with parents.
We are performing a piercing, so there can obviously be some brief discomfort.
Some babies barely react, while others definitely let us know they weren’t consulted beforehand!
Often, being held still and the surprise of what’s happening can contribute to their reaction as much as the piercing itself.
The important thing is that the actual piercing is very quick, and most babies settle surprisingly quickly afterwards.
A Certificate for Their First Earrings
We think getting your baby’s first earrings should feel like a little occasion.
That’s why babies having their ears pierced at The Viper Pit receive their own ear-piercing certificate to take home as a keepsake.
It’s a small touch, but these are the little milestones parents remember.
Instead of the appointment simply being pierce, pay and out the door, we want the experience to feel special from start to finish.
It’s something you can keep and eventually show them when they’re older.
Jewellery for Baby Ear Piercings
Choosing appropriate jewellery for a fresh piercing is extremely important.
We use suitable starter jewellery designed for fresh ear piercings and can talk you through the available options during your appointment.
The initial jewellery needs to remain in place while the piercing begins healing.
We know it’s tempting when you’ve already spotted another pair of tiny earrings you want them to wear, but don’t rush the healing process.
There’ll be plenty of time for different earrings once everything has healed properly.
Baby Ear Piercing Aftercare
The piercing appointment is only the beginning.
Proper aftercare is extremely important for healthy healing.
Before you leave The Viper Pit, we’ll explain exactly how to care for your baby’s new piercings and what you should expect during the healing process.
Keeping hands clean and avoiding unnecessary touching of the piercings is important.
You’ll also want to be conscious of clothing, towels, blankets and anything else that could catch or put unnecessary pressure on the ears.
You won’t be sent home and expected to figure everything out from Google or TikTok.
You’ll receive proper aftercare advice from us, and if you’re ever worried about how the piercing is healing, contact the studio.
We’d much rather you ask.
Should You Twist Baby Earrings?
This is something we’re asked regularly.
Years ago, people were commonly told to constantly twist or rotate new earrings.
Modern professional piercing aftercare has moved on.
Constantly interfering with a healing piercing isn’t necessary.
Follow the aftercare instructions you’re given at your appointment and allow the body time to heal naturally.
How Long Do Baby Ear Piercings Take to Heal?
Ear lobe piercings need time to heal properly.
A common mistake is assuming that because the outside looks healed, everything underneath must be completely healed too.
It isn’t always.
Piercings heal gradually, so it’s important not to rush into changing jewellery too early.
We’ll explain the expected healing process and advise you when it is appropriate to consider changing the jewellery.
A little patience at the beginning can prevent a lot of unnecessary irritation later.
What Happens If There’s a Problem Afterwards?
Our service doesn’t end the second you walk out of the studio.
If you’re worried about redness, swelling, irritation, jewellery or anything else during healing, get in touch with us.
Sometimes we may be able to reassure you from a photograph. Other times we may recommend popping back into the studio so we can have a proper look.
Having somewhere you can return to for professional advice is one of the advantages of choosing an established piercing studio.
Why Experience Matters With Baby Ear Piercing
When you’re trusting somebody to pierce your child, we’d strongly recommend looking beyond price alone.

Hygiene matters.
