Saved a picture of an upper-ear piercing but unsure which service to book? A flat and a helix can sit quite close together in a photograph, especially when the jewellery is small. The difference is the part of the ear being pierced.

If you are comparing flat and helix piercings around Manchester or Salford, use the placement as your starting point, then discuss the exact position and jewellery with your piercer. At The Viper Pit in Irlam, both options are assessed around your individual ear before the position is marked.

Where is a flat piercing?

A flat sits in the flatter cartilage area inside the upper outer rim of the ear. Viewed from the front, it can give a decorative stud a position within that upper area rather than directly on the edge.

The name describes the general region, not one fixed point that works on every ear. The available space, folds and other piercings all need to be considered. A placement that looks central in someone else’s photograph may sit differently on your ear.

Where is a helix piercing?

A helix is placed through the outer upper cartilage rim. It follows the edge of the ear rather than sitting further inside the flatter area.

A forward helix is another named placement, towards the front where the upper ear meets the head. If your reference shows jewellery in that area, mention it when enquiring instead of simply selecting a standard helix appointment.

Our ear-piercing placement guide explains the wider map, including the conch, tragus, rook and lobe.

Look at the placement behind the jewellery

A cluster, small disc or decorative end can make it harder to see the actual hole in a photograph. Try to identify whether the jewellery is on the outer rim or in the area inside it.

If you still cannot tell, send the image. You do not need to guess the correct name before asking us. Include a photograph of your own ear as well, and explain whether you like the location, the jewellery or the overall arrangement.

Choose the look, then discuss the fit

A flat may appeal if you want a decorative focal point within the upper ear. A helix may appeal if you want the jewellery to follow the outer edge. Neither is automatically the right choice simply because it looks good on another person.

Tell Chris about existing piercings and anything you wear around the ear, such as glasses, headphones or a helmet. Also mention which side you normally sleep on and any piercings you are still healing. Those details help with the practical discussion before you commit to the position.

Ask which starter jewellery is suitable for your placement and which decorative options are currently available. A ring or elaborate piece in an inspiration photograph should not be assumed to be suitable for a new piercing.

Can you plan both together?

If you like the idea of a flat and a helix as part of one arrangement, explain the whole plan before booking. The piercer can discuss the spacing, jewellery and whether the work should be arranged together or in stages.

Our guide to booking more than one piercing covers what information to send. Do not assume that choosing two separate services online confirms that the combination will suit your ear.

What does the appointment include?

The Viper Pit’s live service descriptions for flat and helix piercings include an assessment and planned placement, piercing with a sterile, single-use needle, suitable starter jewellery and aftercare guidance. We do not use piercing guns.

Check the piercing menu and current booking details for prices. If you want a particular jewellery style, ask about suitable sizing, availability and any additional cost before arranging your visit.

Once your appointment is planned, our piercing appointment checklist explains what to bring. Keep the aftercare guide handy for afterwards.
